Autism — sensory, masking & burnout

Autistic burnout has historically had almost no validated way to measure it. The instrument behind this app's fields was built by the community it's for.

What this means for tracking: this is direct evidence for keeping burnout and the mood check-in as separate fields rather than folding one into the other — which is already how the app is structured, not a change it needs to make.

A measure built by and for autistic adults

The AASPIRE Autistic Burnout Measure was developed using a community-based participatory approach with autistic adults, not designed top-down by clinicians alone.

Validated at real scale

Its most recent psychometric validation involved 379–835 autistic adults, with factors spanning cognitive, sensory, and social dimensions — closely matching how the app's own sensory, masking, and burnout fields are framed.

Burnout is related to depression — but not the same thing

An independent 2025 validation of the AASPIRE Autistic Burnout Measure, in 379 autistic adults who also completed separate depression, anxiety, and general-burnout measures, found autistic burnout and depression are strongly related but statistically distinct, and that the autism-specific measure outperformed a general burnout scale at identifying it. One estimate puts lifetime autistic burnout at 69% of autistic adults.

Common questions

What's the difference between burnout and masking in the app?

Masking is the effort of suppressing or camouflaging autistic traits in a given moment; burnout is the cumulative exhaustion that can follow sustained masking or sensory load over time — the app tracks them as related but separate fields.
